Score of the Week: The Spider-Man Trilogy

Hello again, all you cool cats!… Ya know what? You can judge me all you want but you should know by now that I’m a kooky guy. I will say zany things. Plus, you keep coming back to read my posts, so…yeah. ANYWAY!

This week we are going to be focusing on the score from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy. I myself am a massive Spidey fan and a huge fan of the movies Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 (I accept the third for what it is). One aspect I have always appreciated of Raimi’s Spider-Man and, more importantly, Peter Parker, was that he did what it took to keep people safe. The risks he took would often cause turmoil in his own personal life, whether it was his finances, his love life, his education, or his relationships with his friends and family. Danny Elfman’s scoring is another one of those winning aspects that helps make these movies so great. The musical choices were nothing short of amazing. As much as I respect James Horner and Hans Zimmer for the scoring work they did on The Amazing Spider-Man series, I never felt that swell of heroic wonder and adventure that I got from Elfman’s compositions. So, this time I am going to take a crack at something new, instead of the regular five tracks, I am going to focus on two scores from each of the films. Sound crazy? Yup. Just crazy enough to work. Now without further ado, let’s get swinging into these tracks, shall we?


“Main Title”

Anyone asks me about the original trilogy and the first track I hear in my head is the one that greets us to our titular hero. Now, this one can be kind of a cheat since this theme plays in each one of the films. I enjoy it even more because with each passing movie, they add the theme for the antagonist in the opening credits. A great little touch.


Transformations is the track that plays during both the main characters’ (Peter Parker and Norman Osborn) physical changes in the movie. This track opens with Peter’s change, going from an eery string violin and building to the triumphant horns before bringing back the feeling of dread as we now focus on Norman’s metamorphosis.

Spider-Man 2

The Train Part II

This is arguably my favorite moment in the entire series. For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about I am going to just cut to the chase, Spider-Man stops a high speed train from careening off the end of the line. I mean, this track just gets it. IT JUST GETS IT SO RIGHT! I feel the tension and sense of urgency. I may not be stopping runaway trains, but when I have this track playing and I am doing dishes, those dishes get done.

“The Goblin Returns”

This track had cool call backs to Goblin’s theme from Spider-Man. I like when composers work old themes into new soundtracks. I’m a sucker for it.

Spider-Man 3

“Harry Confronts Peter”

Remember that time I said I’m a sucker for variations on old themes? Yeah, that hasn’t changed.

“The Birth Of The Sandman”

If “The Train Part II” was the best action set piece of the series, then this was the most emotional. This track is one of the few gems that Spider-Man 3 had hidden within it. I still get chills and goosebumps listening to this track. The scene that accompanies it is just as beautifully crafted as the music. The real gem about this? There was no dialogue in the scene, so you get all of Flint Marko’s heartbreaking story in these three minutes.
